c-FRU – Cellular Fate Reprogramming Unit

The c-FRU lab is able to reprogramme human somatic cells into pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), based on what was first described in 2007 by Yamanaka, Nobel Laureate for Medicine in 2012. This procedure does not alter the genetic make-up of the patient, which is retained both in iPSCs and differentiated cell types.

The achievement of such cells is a highly innovative model for the in vitro study of molecular pathophysiological mechanisms and any customised therapeutic interventions.

The skills acquired from this unit relate to the use of retroviral and lentiviral vectors (STEMCCA OSKM), molecular analysis of clonal pluripotency (qPCR, flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry) and the differentiation of iPSCs to neurons and cardiomyocytes.
