Technology for Health – Educational Goals

It is well known how the technology contribute to the quality of the human health. Bio Engineering or Biomedical engineering may be defined as the application of engineering to medicine and the life sciences. Engineering is here taken to include also the physical sciences and computer science. There is considerable overlap between biomedical engineering and the fields of medical physics, biophysics, biotechnology, bioinformatics, instrumentation and medical informatics. This is a field that is experiencing explosive growth and will continue to do so for the next several years.

A Ph.D. research on Technologies for Health is a three-year interdisciplinary program that combines the fields of engineering and life sciences to acquire new knowledge and to develop products and procedures that will solve medical and health-related problems.

Course Organization

The Ph. D course is organized in three years (6 semesters).

The first year is dedicated to an overview study and to the definition of the Ph.D. research theme. A Tutor will be assigned by the Ph.D. Board which is in charge of all the didactic and organization aspects of the Ph.D development. One or more Advisors monitor specific research aspects of the Ph.D. research. During the first year, all candidates are strongly encouraged to follow Courses specifically projected for PhD.

The II year is dedicated to experimental laboratory activity and to the development of the Ph.D. project methodological and preliminary applicative parts. Results will be evaluated and selected in the III year. The last semester is dedicated to writing a dissertation.

Every year, each PhD student have to pass an exam.  The candidate presents his/her work to the Board of Professors that thoroughly reviews the year activity. Evaluation criteria consider the originality and scientific value of the research as well as the quality of the educational activity.

Training Criteria

The program is based on a philosophy of openness and collaboration, characteristics that encourage innovative and independent thinking and creativity. The collective community has students in all disciplines who can also have peers with diverse career paths in medicine, science, engineering. This community promotes an open exchange of ideas and exposes students to different perspectives on the health sciences. Moreover, students have also access to research opportunities in labs and affiliated teaching hospitals. Students can do research with faculty at any of these institutions and have many opportunities through classes, events, and projects to interact with faculty from all of these institutions.

Career Opportunities

Job opportunities include research both in academic and private institutions in Italy and abroad, and in industry. Fellowships directly sponsored by external subjects facilitate interesting work opportunities. Spin-off and start-up from research results are encouraged. Employment in this field offers various interesting opportunities. By understanding engineering and physical science applications, as well as their clinical and preventive implications, doctoral candidates of this program are well positioned to define new questions and formulate novel approaches in biomedical research.

Eligible Students

All kind of MS degree curricula (five can year course curriculum at University level ) can be eligible for a PhD position. Graduate students can have different backgrounds like medical doctors, engineers, physical scientists, biologists, chemists, biotechnologists.

Faculty Board

The Departments whose members are involved in the Board of the PhD, are national and international leaders in their own specific research areas. Publications in scientific peer review journals, international projects and numerous international collaborations confirm the excellent level of the activity to which the Ph.D. program participates.
