The Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology of the University of Brescia isolated the Coronavirus infecting a patient in Brescia

A major result has been achieved by the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology at the University of Brescia: the team of researchers working with Prof. Arnaldo Caruso – Director of the Laboratory at the Spedali Civili of Brescia and President of the Italian Society for Virology – succeeded in isolating the Italian strain of SARS-CoV-2 that infected a patient in Brescia. Other viral isolates are rapidly adding to the first one.

The researchers Francesca Caccuri and Alberto Zani, involved at the leading edge in the SarsCoV2 isolation research, were able to testify in their laboratory how aggressive the SARS-CoV-2 is against human cells.

This remarkable achievement represents an important step in understanding the mechanism of the virus pathogenicity and developing antiviral drugs and preventive vaccines. This piece of information, obtained from the Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology of the University of Brescia, together with their isolated samples, will become part of the biobank arising at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, under the supervision of the Italian Society for Virology.
