Unibs donates a copy of the Aleni Globe to Zhejiang University

On Saturday 1st September, during the Opening Ceremony of the Conference Heritage Across Borders at the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, the University of Brescia donated a copy of the World Map of Father Giulio Aleni, a Jesuit missionary from the XVII century.

Our University was represented by prof. Alberto Arenghi, delegate of the rector for disabilities, and arch. Mariachiara Bonetti. Zhejiang University, by prof. Lianzhen He, rector delegate for International Affairs and prof. Miao Zhe, Director of Zhejiang University Museums of art and archeology.

 

The Jesuit Father Giulio Aleni, born in Brescia in 1582 from a noble family in Leno, was a missionary in China from 1610 to 1649, when he died in Yanping. Important figure of the late Ming and Quing period, he widespread in the Chinese culture mathematical, geographic and astronomical knowledge.

The University of Brescia, as part of the initiatives aimed at promoting its international profile, obtained from the Vatican Apostolic Library the authorization to reproduce, in a limited edition, a faithful scan of an ancient globe (1623-1649) drawn up by Aleni.
