The course aims to train the students on basic concepts related to
logistics and production systems, mainly focusing on operational issues.
The logistics process.
Logistics evolution. Logistics as integrated view of the processes of
procurement, production, distribution, after-sales service.
Packaging systems.
Types, needs, requirements and standards for primary, secondary and
tertiary packaging. Elements of packaging environmental compatibility.
Design criteria and optimization of packaging units.
Handling systems.
Means and systems for material handling: types, characteristics and
performance criteria for selection and sizing. Modeling support. Manual
material handling.
Storage systems.
Functions, types, operational areas of the warehouse. Criteria for
selection and sizing of storage systems. Policies of operational
management of the warehouse. Modelling and quantitative methods to
support the design and management. The storage of hazardous
substances.
Picking systems.
Description and classification of picking techniques, selection criteria and
optimization methods. Design principles for picking systems.
Transport system.
General concepts of freight transport. Systems and means of transport:
types, characteristics and selection criteria. Optimization of warehousing,
picking and transport. The transport of dangerous goods and perishable
p r o d u c t s .
Exercises.
The course includes exercises which consist in carrying out classroom
exercises and case studies on the topics covered. Visits to particularly
significant storage systems and intermodal terminal will also be
organized.
