At the end of the course students will be able to:
Describe and understand the operation of the main types of turbomachines (hydraulic and thermal turbines, pumps, fans, compressors);
Apply thermodynamics and fluid dynamics principles to model the performance of turbomachines;
Select the optimal type of fluid machine for a specific application (i.e. starting from the head, mass flow, compression ratio, etc. required by the intended fluid machine use);
Evaluate the efficiency of a turbine (either hydraulic or thermal) or of an operating fluid machine (pump or compressor);
Describe steam and gas turbine based power plants and cogeneration plants, estimate the basic performance parameters (efficiency and power production) of these plants, and understrand the main methods used to improve their efficiency.
