This course covers two main topics in computer networks: modelling of traffic behavior at various level of the network stack, and techniques and mechanisms for delivering real-time multimedia. The first part of the course starts with an introduction on markovian theory that will be later used for developing models that can predict the behavior of access networks; it finally presents the evolution of congestion control algorithms like TCP that are fundamental for the correct operation of today’s Internet. The second part of the course focusses on modern protocols that are used for transmitting multimedia contents: it covers both protocols that are used for delivering stored content like movies, and protocols that are adopted by applications that provides video chat and voice calls between users’ equipment. Each part of the theory will be followed by real-world demonstrations using tools that are freely available.
