ENGLISH LANGUAGE
1st YEAR – NURSING AND MIDWIFERY
A. A. 2013-2014 – 2nd Semester
Professor Geraldina Colombo, PhD
COURSE AIMS
The course aims to consolidate the students’ basic language competence, with the specific purpose of revising and reinforcing the rules of English grammar and their correct employment within the discursive context. Together with this, it is also meant to allow students to develop both their expertise to read and comprehend a written text and the skill to present and discuss topics concerning the specialised field of interest, that of midwifery and nursing.
READING LIST
Compulsory texts:
A. Lott, Real English Grammar: The New Intermediate Grammar, Marshall Cavendish, London, 2005
As an alternative to the previous one: R. Murphy, 2012: English Grammar in Use – A self-study reference and practice book for intermediate learners of English, Cambridge Unversity Press, Cambridge
Didactic materials consisting of texts or scientific articles dealing with topics concerned with the midwife profession will be distributed during the lessons, and they will have to be prepared for the exam.
TEACHING METHOD
Lectures with the aid of multimedia materials.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
Students will be tested through an oral exam; they will be asked to do some grammar exercises and/or explain some grammar rules. Besides, they will have to read, translate into Italian and explain the content (thematic and grammatical) of one of the texts analysed during the course. Students are expected to bring all the texts and materials being part of the bibliography directly on the day of the exam.
NOTES
