The students will be acquainted with basic notions on the molecular and cellular structures of living beings, prokaryotes and eukaryotes, which will allow the comprehension of biological mechanisms, with a focus on: - the maintenance of genetic information and its expression in different embryonic and adult cells; -cell cycle regulation of somatic cells; apoptosis and cell survival.
Elucidate the main molecular mechanisms underlying gene expression regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes and their effects on the cells and the entire organisms; as well as mechanisms of gene expression regulation at epigenetic, transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels in eukaryotic cells. To know the main principles and some specific mechanisms of signal transduction in the cell, in cell-cell and in cell-extracellular matrix interactions.
Introduce the students to historical experiments which allowed the comprehension of macromolecule functions and interactions in biological processes. Empower students to understand and to critically evaluate experimental data. To know the principles and some specific examples of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
