Physical mathematics Hydraulics and hydraulic structures
The aim of the course is to provide students in Buildng-architectural engineering in the design methodologies of some fundamental hydraulic works used for the control and management of water resources and their sewerage after use. They will be particularly thorough application issues related to the verification of the operation of existing water infrastructure and options for their rehabilitation. This is particularly important in contexts already urbanized, as many infrastructures are already in place, but now obsolete. Given the vastness of the subject, which requires a drastic selection of the topics to be discussed, it was decided by the works management and control of major interest in the field: the urban water supply sisthems and sewers with some ancillary works of general interest, such as storm drains, siphons , etc.
Recall on the water cycle and the main physical phenomena involved. Distribution of water on the Earth. The water balance of the floods in natural and artificial networks.
Aqueducts. Needs and sources of supply. Variability of requests. Basic water schemes (intake works, transport, storage and distribution). Gravity pipelines. Hydraulic losses in new and used pipelines. Design of the urban reservoirs. Pipe networks design. Problems of pipe verification and project design. Calculation of tree and meshed networks. Pumping stations. Pumping network. Materials for pipelines. Estimated costs of installation and operation. Rehabilitation of water pipes, reservoirs and of intake structures. Sewage. Analysis of heavy rainfalls; losses phenomena. Basic rainfall-runoff models. Estimation of flood flows. Types of networks of urban drainage and preliminary analysis. Design of the network scheme on the basis of urban map and topography. Estimate of sewage flow. Estimated design hietograph. Italian 'critical design event'. Verification and project a drainage pipe. Dilution ratio, and flow rates to be adduced at purification treatment plants. Hydraulic calculations of the main sewer works: siphon, spillways, free surface profiles in the pipes. Manufacture of Special intake structures, storm drains, detention basins and pumping stations. The restoration of the sewers: problems and methods. Ancient drainage. Restoration of artifacts. The course will be supplemented with seminars, visits to construction sites and in factories producing manufactured goods.
