Knowledge of elementary mechanics and electromagnetism (Fisica Sperimentale (Mecc., Electromagn.) course)
The aim of the course Fisica Sperimentale (Ottica Onde) is to illustrate the main phenomena of wave propagation, both in the mechanical and electromagnetic domains. In the latter domain a detailed attention is devoted to the propagation of visible light. Geometrical optics with applications to mirrors, lenses and compound optical instruments is developed first. Then the different phenomena connected to the wave nature of light, interference, diffraction, polarization, are illustrated emphasizing technological applications. The theoretical treatment is enriched by experimentations of phenomena and physical laws performed in the classroom.
Formalism of wave propagation, mechanical waves and sound, electromagnetic waves and light, geometrical optics and physical optics, interference, diffraction, polarization.
Main topics of the course are: 1) Oscillatory motion 2) Wave propagation 3) Sound waves and acustics 4) Maxwell equations 5) Electromagnetic waves 6) Light reflection and refraction on plane surfaces 7) Spherical mirrors and lenses 8) Interference 9) Diffraction 10) Gratings and spectra 11) Polarization

Theoretical lessons and exercises in classroom. Simple experimental demonstrations in laboratory.
The exam consists in a written test in which a set of exercises to be solved is proposed and in an oral discussion concerning the written test and topics of the program.
