The existing relationships between different manufacturing technologies and microstructural/mechanical behavior of metallic components is the first aim of the course. In addition to hot and cold plastic deformation processes the different welding procedures (both for steels and non-ferrous alloys) and the modification of the surface induced by different coating deposition techniques (anodic oxidation, PVD and CVD, thermal spraying) are investigated. The control of the welding using different techniques is also examined. The production of sintered parts is analyzed from the choice of the powder to the sintering procedures. The effect both of porosities( in terms of shape, distribution and percentage ) and pre-existing flaws is considered along with their influence on the final mechanical properties of the sintered parts.
The course analyses the various manufacturing technologies for the production of structural metallic components in terms of resulting mechanical, metallurgical and microstructural behavior.
- Comparison of different manufacturing technologies (forging, extrusion, milling, wire drawing) in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties; production of concrete reinforcing rods as an example of a low cost product with prefixed mechanical and technological behavior.
- Solidification: difference between ingots and continuous casting. Effect of process parameters on segregation. Examples of numerical simulation.
- Cold and hot forging. Microstructural modification, strengthening mechanisms and defects.
- Welding: microstructural modifications (Fusion Zone and Heat Affected Zone). Different welding technologies: arc welding, laser, electron beam welding, friction stir welding. Quality control and inspection of welded joints.
- Coatings: thin films (PVD and CVD) and thick coatings ( anodic oxidation, thermal spray). Testing to control a coating: hardness, adhesion, thickness, corrosion and wear measurements. Examples of low friction coatings. Quality control and inspection.
- Powder metallurgy production: powders (type and properties), compacting, sintering and post-treatments. Microstructure and mechanical behavior of different sintered steels. Design of a sintered component.
