The course aims at introducing the automotive engineering students to the design principles related to chassis and transmission of automobiles, industrial and off-highway vehicles, and motorbikes. The basic theory of Vehicle Dynamics (in terms of active safety, driveability, and comfort) is used as an introduction to the design of the vehicle chassis and related subsystems: driveline, braking system, steering and suspension. Particular attention is focused on how tyre mechanics affects vehicle behaviour. At the end of the course the students should be able to set the overall vehicle layout and estimate its dynamic properties, also by means of CAE tools for design, computation and simulation.
